in Ordinary Time

Dear Friends in Christ,
Most of us, I suspect, keep multiple calendars, and we make plans for important events in our lives by the week, month, and year. These events — in the past, present, and future — we often think of as a time line. This much is so obvious that it doesn’t occur to us that the very concept of linear time was unknown in most of human history and is a consequence of Divine Revelation which discloses that the universe is created, not eternal, and that the created cosmos had a beginning and it will have an end. Time itself was created by God, who chose to live in time by becoming man and living and dying for us to redeem everything created from ruination — including time.
In the Sacred Liturgy we have the intersection of time counted on a clock and the fullness of time at which the Word became flesh and redeemed time, and so we have a liturgical calendar to order the celebration of the sacred mysteries that make present to the Church in every time and place the saving events of the past and allow us to participate now in the glory that is to come on the Last Day when time as we know it will cease to be.
These are among the many reasons why the Church invests such effort in the calculation of time and the loving care of the liturgical calendar, and that explains why even the way the Western world counts time by months and years is the result of a proclamation by Pope Gregory XIII. The civil calendar followed by most of the world exists because the Catholic Church wanted to be sure about the proper dates for the celebration of Easter, and this in turn reminds us why the Church is so concerned with remaining mindful of dates in salvation history.
Here are some dates in the next month which do not fall on a Sunday of which I hope you will be mindful:
- On Mon, Aug 29th, the Church celebrates the Martyrdom of St. John the Baptist. Holy Scripture describes the gruesome circumstances of John’s martyrdom (Matt 14:3-12, Mark 6:17-29), including the fact that John’s disciples took his body away for burial. An ancient tradition identifies the place of John’s burial as the village of Sebaste in Samaria, and the feast is kept on August 29th because on this date in the 4th century, the Church of St. John Baptist was dedicated over his grave.
- On (First) Sat, Sept 3rd, the Church honours Pope St. Gregory the Great, one of the greatest reformers of Christian history. He was born around 540 in Rome and died in 604 after 14 years on the Chair of St. Peter. St. Gregory sent missionaries to England and erected the Diocese of Canterbury, reformed the liturgy and sacred music (giving his name to a style of chant), and wrote masterful works of moral theology and pastoral instruction.
- On Thurs, Sept 8th (nine months since the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception), the Church celebrates the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. In the 5th century, a church was dedicated on this date in Jerusalem, built over the traditional location of the home of Sts. Joachim and Anne, the parents of the Mother of God.
- Wed, Sept 14th is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross.
- Wed, Sept 21st is the Feast of St. Matthew, Evangelist and Apostle.
- Thurs, Sept 29th is the Feast of Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels.
The Church invites us to share in the riches of the liturgy by attending Mass every day, but when that is not possible, at least we can follow the calendar and readings of the liturgy with a breviary or prayer book to savour the full consequences in time and space of the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Put these and many other such dates in your calendar along with reminders about volleyball games and doctor’s appointments and scheduled oil changes. All of time is sacred.

Colleen MacAlister leading the residents of Caressant Care in joyful songs. Colleen and I bring Holy Communion and give the Anointing of the Sick to residents on the third Tuesday of each month, at 2pm.
- I'll be away on a priests' workshop in Malta from Aug 30-Sept 9th. Grateful to Fr. Price for covering everything during this period. Note that Wed's Mass next week will be in Madoc @ 9am.
- Christianity has almost 2000 years of history in Malta. According to tradition, it was brought to the Islands by none other than the Apostle Paul himself in around A.D. 60. Paul was being taken to Rome to be tried as a political rebel, but the ship carrying him and some 274 others was caught in a violent storm only to be wrecked two weeks later on the Maltese coast. All aboard swam safely to land. The welcome given to the survivors is described in the Acts of the Apostles 28:1 by St. Luke: “And later we learned that the island was called Malta. And the people who lived there showed us great kindness, and they made a fire and called us all to warm ourselves… ” As the fire was lit, Paul was bitten by a poisonous snake but he suffered no ill effects. The islanders took this as a sign that he was a special man.
- Fascinating and well-explained thread about the Tower of Babel: what exactly did Babel's builders do wrong?
- Super interesting piece in the WSJ. An excerpt, re: the many yard signs proclaiming tribal membership in the inane language of modern progressivism: “They’re enjoying the approval of their own consciences without training their minds in any serious way through moral effort.”
- Reminds me of Chesterton's view on modern compassion: "It seems to me that you only pardon the sins that you don’t really think sinful. You only forgive criminals when they commit what you don’t regard as crimes. You forgive because there isn’t anything to be forgiven."

- Another reminder that each person who receives Holy Communion should clearly say “Amen” after the acclamation “The Body of Christ” and before the act of receiving Communion. (The “Amen” should be loud enough for the Communion minister to hear because it is a confession of faith which must precede the administration of the sacrament.)
- More predictably horrifying news about the pressure vulnerable Canadians are getting to choose euthanasia. These conversations are dehumanizing, devaluing & coercive. To make matters worse, in March 2023, Canada will become one of the few nations in the world allowing "medical aid in dying" for people whose sole underlying condition is depression, bipolar disorder, personality disorders, schizophrenia, PTSD or any other mental affliction. - Sheer madness!

Sad News: Longtime friend of the parish and good good woman JOSEPHINE GOODING passed away on Wednesday, after suffering a stroke on Saturday. What a good woman. Fortunately, Josie was given the Last Rites by Fr. Whalen just in time. Also, Garry Poirier's sister KAYE POIRIER died the other day too, so condolences to Garry & Brenda. In your kindness, say an Ave for the repose of their souls.
