Born in Northern Spain, Ignatius' leg was shattered by a cannonball in 1520. During his recovery, he read stories of the saints and the life of Christ and devoted himself to a life of holiness.
His followers became known as the "Society of Jesus," or "The Jesuits." Ignatius died in 1556 and was declared a saint in 1622. He is the patron of soldiers and educators.
