Here's what's happening this week!
Annual Diocesan Appeal
Scripture can sometimes be confusing. We know that God created everything and called it all “good.” But in today’s Gospel reading, Jesus seems to suggest that partaking in this good creation—having enough to eat, being able to provide for our material needs, and enjoying ourselves and the earth—is somehow bad, even a curse. What’s going on?
None of these things—wealth, good food, laughter, or praise—are bad in their own right. The problem is when we are satisfied by these earthly things—when we’re so filled up with them that we lose the desire for God.
In contrast to this, Jesus praises those who are empty—the poor, the hungry, the sorrowful, and the excluded—again, not because poverty or hunger or any of these things are good in their own right, but because when we find ourselves in these conditions, we’re more open to God. We know that nothing here will ultimately satisfy us, and so we turn to Him.
The Church calls this the virtue of spiritual poverty—and it can transform the way we think about wealth. Instead of wealth becoming a kind of ball and chain, that holds us down and holds us back, spiritual poverty allows us to see that whatever we have is a gift—a gift God has entrusted to us and asks us to use prudently as His stewards. Let’s keep the virtue of spiritual poverty in mind as we discern—as a community and as families—how we can support our Annual Diocesan Appeal.
National Marriage Week
The observances of National Marriage Week (Feb. 7-14) and World Marriage Day (Sunday, Feb. 13) are an opportunity to focus on building a culture of life and love that begins with supporting and promoting marriage and the family. We invite all married couples to come join us at any of the 3 Masses this weekend to receive a special blessing.
DYC 2022
This weekend, we will have 5 youth and 3 adult volunteers traveling to the Diocesan Youth Conference in Richmond, VA. We ask that you keep them in your prayers.

Wednesday Night Bible Study
In February 16th, the Wednesday Night Bible Study will change topic to Lectio: Prayer. The Bible Study Group meets on Wednesdays from 6 p.m.- 7 p.m. If you would be interested in joining the group, please click the Sign Up button.
Confirmation & First Holy Communion
Sundays 10:15 am - 11:45 am
This Sunday, February 13th, 1st Communion students will have class at 10:15 a.m.
Confirmation candidates must schedule an appointment with Fr. Anthony by the end of January. Confirmation candidates who have not turned in their sponsor form must turn it in as soon as possible.
Confirmation Mass will be held on Thursday, March 3rd at 7 p.m. We encourage all parishioners to attend.
Family Faith Formation
Most Wednesdays, 6:00 - 7:30 pm
Faith Formation is Catholic religious education for children in Pre-K3 through 12th grade.

Box Tops for Education
We are still taking Box Tops! Box Tops for Education has a new app for attaining Box Top points. You can also go to BTFE.COM. They are still accepting clipped Box Tops and will continue to do so until products no longer have them on the packages. Labels may be left in the church or school office. These labels provide the school with free educational supplies.
Help SHCS, Help You!
Would you like to direct your Virginia State Taxes to Sacred Heart Catholic School? You can through the Virginia Education Improvement Scholarships Tax Credits program. Individuals or businesses making contributions of $500 or more can receive a Virginia TAX CREDIT equal to 65% of the donation. The monies are used for tuition assistance for students from families whose household income is less than 300% of the poverty level (for example, $72,900 for a family of 4), or 400% if the child is disabled. In addition, donors who itemize will also receive deductions for charitable contributions on state and federal taxes. Participants should consult their tax advisors to determine their specific tax savings. Individuals and businesses can receive substantial tax benefits by contributing through the EISTC program. Mass Times
Bishop Knestout and other bishops have decided to lift the dispensation of the Sunday and Holy Days Mass obligation in the Dioceses of Richmond, and will reinstate that obligation beginning on Saturday, June 26, 2021 and Sunday, June 27, 2021. We welcome and encourage the Faithful to return to full in-person participation of the Sunday Eucharist, the source and summit of our Catholic faith. This obligation does not apply to those who are ill; those who have reason to believe that they were recently exposed to the coronavirus, another serious or contagious illness; those who are confined to their home, a hospital, or nursing facility; or those with serious underlying health conditions. Dear Sacred Heart Parishioners:
This is just a friendly reminder as it has become more and more frequent that people are receiving fake emails requesting money, gift cards, etc. from someone pretending to be a person that you know. Unfortunately, many of these emails tend to come in the form of an email account pretending to be Fr. Anthony, other parish office personnel, or school personnel. While, the Diocesan I.T. Department has zero control over which email accounts are created, it’s important to identify these fake email accounts, and remember that Fr. Anthony (or any Diocesan employee for that matter) will not handle business through an email address that is not part of the Richmond Diocese domain (@richmonddiocese.org). This is also the case for any Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Sacred Heart Catholic School employee and our email domains (@sheartchurch.org and @sheartschool.com, respectively).
These scams continue to be perpetuated because they continue to work. We ask that you do not reply to such emails, click on links within those emails or download content in them. If you receive help requests that you think are legitimate, verify that the person is legitimate by calling them directly on another known valid number. Don’t ask the emailer for information or a call. Find an offline method of correspondence that you and that person have used in the past to talk with each other.

Christmas Poinsettias
We will be decorating the church with poinsettias for Christmas. If you would like to purchase a poinsettia in honor or in memory of someone, please submit a check payable to Sacred Heart Catholic Church in the amount of $16.00. Place the check along with your printed intention in an envelope and bring it by the parish office. The deadline for ordering is Thursday, December 17th. Thank you for always answering the call to help beautify our altar and sanctuary at Christmas, We could not do it without you!
