About this event

Join us for a six-week book club in which we will read portions of "Primal Loss: The Now-Adult Children of Divorce Speak," edited by Leila Miller. Registration is free; the only cost is the cost of the book itself. Please note that you will have to purchase the book on your own, and we encourage you to do so as soon as possible so that it has time to arrive before we begin.

***UPDATE*** The book is available for free online at https://www.leilamiller.net/digitalbook

Primal Loss is a unique project. Leila Miller wanted to explore and raise awareness of the wound of parental divorce, so she conducted one-on-one interviews with 70 different adult children of divorce. Each chapter of Primal Loss starts with a question that she posed to these ACODs, and what follows are the responses she received.

Through our six week series, we will read from six different chapters, as outlined below. Don't worry about reading the whole chapter - just read at least five responses each week.

- April 20 - Chapter One - What was the effect of the divorce on you?

- April 27 - Chapter Two - What were your feelings when it happened vs. now as an adult?

- May 4 - Chapter Four - Are children resilient?

- May 11 - Chapter Seven - What is the role of faith in healing?

- May 18 - Special Appearance: Leila Miller

- May 25 - Chapter Ten - Stories of hope (i.e. couples on the brink who reconciled)

Each meeting will consist of an opening prayer and remarks (7:45-8:00) and small group time (8:00-8:45) with trained leaders. The exception to the norm will be May 18, when Leila herself will join us! She will lead us in prayer, give us a background into how the book came to be, and take questions.

Please note that some of the responses we will see in the book are a bit raw. We encourage you to pray before and after reading each week.

If you have questions, please contact Alex at alexander.wolfe@arlingtondiocese.org or 703-841-3807.
