    THE THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

40 HOURS OF EUCHARISTIC ADORATION BEGINS NEXT WEEKEND!

Did you know that every parish in the Diocese of Cleveland has been assigned a week in which to spend time in solemn adoration of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament? This year our week begins on the Fourth Sunday of Easter April 21st. Beginning with the 5:30 PM Mass on April 21st and closing with a solemn evening prayer at 6:30 PM on Tuesday April 23rd our parish will be spending over 40 straight hours in Eucharistic Adoration in church. During this time our adoration chapel will be closed, and all our regular adorers will be invited to pray in church instead of the chapel. The church will be open all night long for two days so please stop by and spend some time with Jesus in adoration. All our school children, Columbkids religious education students, parishioners and families are invited to pray anytime in church throughout these holy days. In addition to 8:15 AM Mass on Monday and Tuesday we will be hosting a family holy hour on Monday April 22nd at 6:30 PM in church.

Resources will be available in church for prayer throughout the adoration time so bring a friend and learn to pray with Jesus in the Holy Eucharist! Jesus’ real presence in the most blessed Sacrament gives our parish supernatural strength.

WHAT IS 40 HOURS EUCHARISTIC DEVOTIONS – WHY THE NUMBER 40?

The Forty Hours Devotion is a special forty-hour period of continuous prayer made before the Blessed Sacrament in solemn exposition. Of course, the focus of this devotion is on the Holy Eucharist. As Catholics, the words of our Lord burn in our hearts: “I myself am the living bread come down from Heaven. If anyone eats this bread, He shall live forever; the bread I will give is my flesh for the life of the world” (John 6:51).

Affirming our belief in the real presence of our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, Vatican Council II taught that the Holy Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life” (Lumen Gentium, #11). While the Mass is the central act of worship for us Catholics, an act which participates in the eternal reality of our Lord’s passion, death, and resurrection, Vatican Council II upheld and encouraged the adoration of the Blessed Sacrament outside of Mass.  The number forty has always signified a sacred period of time: the rains during the time of Noah lasted 40 days and nights; the Jews wandered through the desert for 40 years, our Lord fasted and prayed for 40 days before beginning His public ministry. The 40 Hours Devotion remembers that traditional “forty-hour period” from our Lord’s burial until the resurrection.

The Forty Hours Devotion begins with a Solemn Mass of Exposition (for us it’s at 5:30 PM on Sunday April 21st) and concludes with the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and Evening Prayer at 6:30 PM on Tuesday April 23rd.

    DURING THE 40 HOURS

The Blessed Sacrament remains on the altar in a monstrance. During the next 40 hours, the faithful gather for personal or public prayer in adoration of our Lord. The Blessed Sacrament is reposed in the tabernacle for the daily Mass, and then returned for exposition after Mass.

WE HAVE A PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CHAPEL AT ST. COLUMBKILLE!

We are truly blessed as a parish to have a perpetual Eucharistic Adoration chapel that is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week for anyone to stop by and spend time with our Lord Jesus Christ in prayer. The Eucharist is the heart and soul of the Church and all our supernatural strength and divine life flows from the sacred heart of our Lord Jesus. Do you have 1 hour a month to spend with Jesus…how about 1 hour a week? Remember that you become like those you spend time with so if you want to become more like Jesus, you need to be with Jesus in Adoration!

As your pastor I invite you to please consider spending time with Jesus in Eucharistic Adoration. If you want to sign up for a weekly or monthly holy hour please contact Scott Effertz in the rectory office by phone 216-524-1987 ext. 15 or by email: seffertz@stcolumbkilleparish.org
