What is Lent?
Lent is the annual season of preparation for the Most Holy of all Seasons in the Church, Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday (March 6) and ends on Holy Thursday evening (April 18), when the Triduum begins.
All healthy Catholics from age 18-59 fast and abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday and abstain from meat all other Fridays during Lent
Youth ages 14-17 are also required to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday
When fasting, a person is permitted to eat one full meal, as well as two smaller meals that together are not equal to a full meal.
We are also urged to renew ourselves spiritually throughout Lent by practicing the three main Lenten disciplines: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. There are many ways to do all three of these things. Perhaps one way to consider is through social media.
Many people today fast from social media during lent. However, you could also view social media in a different way. Rather than fasting completely, fast from those things that are harmful, such as sharing gossip or posting or liking hurtful or inappropriate memes.
Then incorporate prayer and giving into social media. For example, post prayers that are especially meaningful to you during lent to share with others. Or, intentionally give encouragement via social media to those whom you know need it. Post ways (special fundraisers that you know about, information on worthy organizations) for people to give to the needy or poor.
St. Peter Lenten Almsgiving Project Please join us in continuing our Lenten tradition of supporting the Missionary Parish in the diocese of Huancayo, Peru. The parish is located in Iscozacin at Asan Ramon, in the middle of the jungle region of Peru. There are two priests serving this mission, and one of them is Father Antony Lichon, a seminary classmate of Father Gregory. He has been working in Peru for 19 years. The mission serves 70 villages, and is in need of chapels for the villages and school supplies for the children. Please take a small bag from the gathering area to collect your spare change (or more!), and return your bag to St. Peter on or before Easter Sunday. 100% of your donations will support the parish in Peru.
