Mass of Atonement
Friday, August 28, 2020 at 12:10 p.m.
Please join us for a special Mass this Friday at our regular Mass time. Fr. Jonathan will celebrate a Mass of Atonement for sins committed by Danville city leaders and residents over the past centuries, especially for its active role in supporting Confederate forces during the Civil War and the violence perpetrated against demonstrators during the civil rights movement.
The date of this Mass of Atonement is significant for multiple reasons. On the evening of August 28, an important "Unity Matters" rally will be held in Danville to mark the 57th anniversary of the March on Washington and the "I Have a Dream" speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Also, August 28 is the Feast of St. Augustine, one of the most important writers and theologians in Christian history. A native of North Africa, he is one of our most important saints "of color."
The Mass will also be live-streamed on the parish Facebook page. At the conclusion of Mass, Fr. Jonathan will sprinkle those present with holy water, reminding them of their baptismal mandate to work for justice, unity, and respect for all people, which are constitutive elements of the Kingdom of God.
