CORA Services has named Sr. Donna Shallo, IHM their 2018 Civic Champion for Children. Sr. Donna will be presented with the award at CORA’s 47th Annual Champions for Children Celebration on GIVING TUESDAY – Tuesday, November 27, 2018, at the Union League Golf Club at Torresdale.
CORA’s Champion Awards recognize extraordinary individuals and organizations who have been instrumental in creating a brighter future for children and families in the Philadelphia region. Sr. Donna has dedicated her life to Catholic education at many levels and embodies the charism of the IHMs – love, creative hope, and fidelity – in her personal and professional interactions. Sr. Donna was the gracious and attentive leader of the excellent team at Little Flower Catholic High School for Girls for the past 18 years. CORA is proud to honor Sr. Donna for her 27 year-long commitment to empowering young women at Little Flower and congratulates her on celebrating her 50th Jubilee year as a Servant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Sr. Donna taught elementary school for 12 years. Her first assignment was St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Downingtown. Her elementary education experience includes stretches at St. Edmond, St. Monica, St. Gabriel and St. Anselm. Sister then taught at St. Maria Goretti High School, now Ss. John Neumann and Maria Goretti, as well as, Archbishop Ryan. Through Act 89 funding, CORA has provided counseling, education, psychology and speech services in these schools and many more for nearly 50 years. Sr. Donna was chosen as the 2018 Champion due to her excellent reputation within the CORA community. Many staff members, a number of whom are proud Little Flower alumnae, put forth her name as a worthy candidate for this recognition. Approximately 1/3 of Little Flower’s enrollment comes from the 19111 Fox Chase zip code where CORA’s headquarters is located, but Sr. Donna’s reputation reaches far beyond the Northeast. Not only has she made a difference in the lives of many young women and children as an Archdiocesan teacher, but her presidency at Little Flower helped ensure that the High School has a sustainable future and can continue to educate young women in the tradition of St. Therese for years to come.

Since 1971, CORA Services has been helping youth and families in the Philadelphia region. CORA’s mission is to help those facing academic or social challenges by delivering support and creating opportunities for development and productivity. Today, CORA serves nearly 20,000 children every year, guided by the words of the foundress, Sister Charity Kohl, “Children are the Heart of the Matter.” In partnership with more than 220 schools throughout Philadelphia and Camden, CORA provides academic support, school counseling, occupational therapy, speech and language services, psychological services, truancy services, and student assessment programs. CORA also offers individual and family counseling, mental health treatment, substance use services, teen/young adult pregnancy services, intensive prevention services, early intervention, after-school and summer programs, and preschool education.
